Moon Rescue - UPDATED
Suitable for: Years 7 - 8
Duration: 90 minutes
Space travellers have disappeared on the Moon, possibly captured by aliens! You must train as astronauts to go and rescue them. A host of hands-on activities, challenges and demonstrations will be undertaken on this training program. Please note that this program is only available at our centre.
Investigating Climate Change - NEW
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Students discuss the concept of climate change, investigate factors that contribute to global warming and explore some of the ways science is working towards a sustainable future.
Investigations include the greenhouse effect, energy efficiency and the effects of climate change on albedo, ocean acidity and sea level rise.
Future Circuits – NEW
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Students explore the difference between circuits in parallel and series, conductors and resistors and ways to generate sustainable energy.
Circuit components include LEDs, resistors, capacitors, solar panels, wind turbines and more.
Be an Engineer
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Your class will learn about the work of engineers and construct bridges using engineering templates.
Eco Enigma - UPDATED
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
In this environmental hypothetical, students measure heavy metals, analyse river salt, explore why fish stocks are declining, and recommend an action plan for the future of the community. This hands-on problem-solving program is relevant to Tasmania’s current environmental issues.
Forensic Science
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Solve a crime by analysing evidence left at the scene. Gain an exciting insight into the intriguing world of forensic science.
Biotechnology
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
This hands-on workshop introduces students to the world of DNA science used in the rapidly developing area of biotechnology. Students will extract DNA and carry out a gel electrophoresis activity. Basic genetics will be covered as well as the applications of these techniques. The session will be presented in the context of forensic science and references are made to the ethical implications of this work.
Ice Cold
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Students compare the properties of water ice and dry ice under a variety of conditions using simple tests. Liquid nitrogen is investigated with the support of some classic demonstrations. Students are treated with ice-cream made using liquid nitrogen so they can ponder subjectively on the ice-crystals buried in the frozen cream. Available in June. Illusions
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
This program is a mix of 2- and 3-dimensional illusions that challenge the adage 'seeing is believing'. Students recognise the limits of their perception and the processes applied by their eyes and brain. Please note that this program is only available at our centre.
Puzzlemania
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Scientists are puzzle solving addicts! This collection of puzzles is supported by specially made props which let students use tactile and other sensory skills in approaching and arriving at possible solutions.
Quarantine Matters - AQIS
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
Check out the science, technology, issues and challenges of keeping unwanted pests and diseases out of Tasmania. Developed with the assistance of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, the program contains a range of activities using up-to-date techniques.
Working Scientifically
Suitable for: Years 7 - 10
Duration: 120 minutes
A hands-on session examining scientific method in detail, considering concepts such as hypotheses, variables and fair tests. Students develop skills such as measuring, collecting and analysing results.
Nanotechnology - NEW
Suitable for: Years 9 - 10
Duration: 90 minutes
A workshop about the very, very small. Designed to give students a hands-on experience and insight into nanoscience and its application in the world of nanotechnology.
Innovations in areas such as health and medicine, consumer products, energy and environment are covered.
